Our School initiates interactive dialogues with students
SDSC has hosted two student events recently to connect with our students and to rekindle affiliation. These meet-ups in small-group offered platforms for our Dean Professor Joe QIN to chat with fellow undergraduate and postgraduate students in a leisurely atmosphere on an array of topics, from their study aspirations, learning experience, personal goals, to career aspirations, etc. The students expressed gratitude to SDSC for the motivation and supportive guidance rendered from the School.
On 12 March, a group of elite SDSC undergraduates came together at the Dean’s List Award Presentation. It was a recognition of our hard-working students who had achieved 3.7 or higher in a semester. Due to the pandemic, the award presentation was a combined one to celebrate the awardees of the academic year 2019/20 and 2020/21. Our Dean gave out certificates to our best students and mingled with them to share his experience and advice. Programme leaders Dr Xiang ZHOU and Dr Zijun ZHANG; as well as Deputy Programme Leaders Dr Qingpeng ZHANG and Dr Clint HO, were also presented to share this joyful moment.
On another occasion on 29 March, the Dean exchanged ideas with MSDS students in a casual setting. The gathering - “Meeting with the Dean” provided an opportunity for the School to listen to students’ sharing and reflections towards the MSDS programme at different stages, including admission, enrolment, teaching & learning, student support, etc. Apart from insightful sharing from the Dean in particular on encouraging students to widen horizons, Programme Leader Dr Matthias TAN and Deputy Programme Leader Dr Long FENG also joined with a fruitful dialogue. Using their valuable life lessons as examples, they enlightened our students to self-improve and prepare to embark on a career journey of taking up a new role as data scientist upon their graduation in coming months.
