“Data Scientist/Analyst is the sexiest job of the 21st century” [1]

has excited job markets around the world.

As big data becomes one of the most popular topics in various sectors of industry and business, there is a substantial need for professional manpower in data science in Hong Kong society. Data scientists and analysts have become one of the “Top 10 Most In-Demand Tech Jobs in Hong Kong” in 2017 [2] and 2020 [3] The salaries for data scientists and analysts are also rapidly rising [4] [5] .

The fast rate of growth of demand in data science has created many new and exciting opportunities for graduates of data science. They can choose to find data science jobs in a private or a public sector, such as data engineers (where software engineering expertise is applied to handle large amounts of data), data analytics (where expertise is applied to study data and provide analysis to explain insights from data), and data scientists (where expertise is applied to fine-tune the mathematical models and statistical learning methods used in data analysis). They may also choose to continue with graduate studies to further their overall data science expertise.

Although data scientist might be wanted everywhere in the society, so far, it is clearly observable and foreseeable that data science graduates will serve in following fields [6]:
