IFAC Workshop Series (Module 1) on “Control Systems and Data Science Towards Industry 4.0”

IFAC Workshop Series (Module 1) on “Control Systems and Data Science Towards Industry 4.0”

The 1st Module of IFAC Workshop Series on “Control Systems and Data Science Towards Industry 4.0” was successfully held on 19 Mar, 2021.  It is privileged to have renowned scholars and industrial leaders to co-host the workshop in three different time zones, they included Prof Jie CHEN and Prof S. Joe QIN from the City University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong); Prof Rolf FINDEISEN from the Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg (Germany) and Dr Hong ZHAO from the Aspen Technology (United States).

The workshop series is co-organized by the School of Data Science and Hong Kong Institute for Data Science, City University of Hong Kong; and is supported by the Activity Fund of the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) with its Technical Committees, namely TC6.1 Chemical Process Control and TC1.1 Modelling, Identification and Signal Processing.  The workshop series consist of three modules, each of the module focuses on a specific technology theme.   The 1st Module focuses on “Data Science and Automatic Control Systems”.  During the 2.5-hour module, featuring as the moderator, Prof Jie Chen welcomed all participants and speeches were delivered by speakers  from academia and industries.

The panel discussion was the highlight of the workshop.  Speakers shared their insights and knowledge on the topics of machine learning, model predictive control (MPC), the interplay between data science and systems theory, and application-oriented topics with the moderator by addressing questions from online participants.  The session was well-received and speakers even extended the discussion time due to overwhelming responses.

The event gained great enthusiasm and attracted more than 240 participants all over the world to join with the speakers and moderator on how the emerging technology on data science and artificial intelligence would revolutionize the theory and practice in engineering.   It brings about fruitful discussion and interaction, not just only the speakers on stage, but also amongst the participants.

The IFAC Workshop Series will feature two more modules in May (21 May) and July 2021.  Stay tuned at https://www.cityu.edu.hk/sdsc_web/IFAC2021/.
