SDSC’s master student shines at Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) 2023

Master student Jill LEUNG awarded YPEC 2023

Miss Jill LEUNG Chiu-yee, a master student of the School of Data Science who is supervised by Professor ZHAO Xiangyu (SDSC) and Professor DONG Liang (SEE), won the championship (Postgraduate Session) of her innovative project entitled ‘Blockchain-based Carbon Footprint Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Tool” in IET Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition (YPEC) held on 15 October 2023.

Jill's award-winning project focuses on addressing the issues related to data quality in carbon auditing. Her project specifically targets the challenges at both the property and regional levels. She has developed a tool called the "Blockchain-based Carbon Footprint Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Tool" to tackle these challenges. As carbon neutrality commitments gain more importance, there is an increasing need for monitoring, disclosing, and verifying carbon emissions from individual assets to larger regions. However, the lack of reliable and easily accessible data remains a major obstacle in accurately calculating carbon emissions. Additionally, finding a balance between security and transparency is a challenging task. To overcome these obstacles, Jill has created a technical solution that combines expertise in engineering and carbon data auditing, AI capabilities, and the secure and transparent nature of blockchain technology. Her project also showcases the innovative application of data science and digital technologies in solving practical challenges, opening up limitless opportunities for the field of data science. With this initiative, young researchers are driving technological advancements in the engineering sector and fostering the development of Web3.0 applications.
