Election to National Academy of Inventors

Professor S. Joe QIN

Professor Joe Qin Sizhao, Chair Professor of Data Science, Dean of the School of Data Science, and Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Data Science, has been elected to the rank of Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Professor Qin is the first CityU scholar ever to receive this distinguished honour while serving on our faculty.

His election is for demonstrating a “highly prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on the quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society,” according to the NAI. 

Professor Qin is also Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the International Federation of Automatic Control. 

His expertise lies in industrial data analytics, statistical machine learning, data science for systems, latent variable methods; high-dimensional time series modeling, model predictive control, system identification, data-driven control and optimisation, energy and process systems.
